A DIFFICULT CHILDHOOD AND THE FIRST STEPS TOWARD CREATIVITY

The future actor was born in Horton, Manchester, in 1942. John had a younger brother. At first, everything was fine in their family. The father provided for the family by working as a tool-setter at an aircraft factory, and later as a truck driver. When the father went to work to earn a living, the mother raised the children at home. However, later, she made a difficult decision to leave the family. Thaw was only seven years old then. The two boys stayed with their father who was missing at work around the clock. All this undoubtedly affected the psycho-emotional state of John and his brother. In particular, he became a heavy smoker at the age of 12.

Despite family difficulties, Thaw tried to develop and find his purpose in life. He graduated from Ducie Technical High School for Boys and continued his education at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he won the Academy’s Vanburgh Award. That was the beginning of his path to acting fame.

DEVELOPMENT OF JOHN’S ACTING CAREER

From the age of 18, Thaw began to develop his career actively. In particular, in 1960, he made his first appearance on the theatre stage in a play A Shred of Evidence.

And two years later, Thaw was invited to act in his first film The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. After the release of his debut film, Thaw started to receive more and more invitations to various TV shows and film projects. The 1960s were an incredibly busy period in his career. In particular, at that time, his filmography was replenished with the following films:

  • the BBC series Z-Cars
  • the series Redcap
  • the movie The Avengers
  • the movie Bat Out of Hell
  • the series Inheritance
  • the TV play The Talking Head
  • and many others.

However, John became really popular in the late 1980s, when he appeared in the British detective-drama series Inspector Morse. There, Thaw played the leading role of detective Endeavour Morse.

Inspector Morse was shown from 1987 to 2000. It consists of 14 seasons and tells the story of the investigations carried out by Inspector Morse, a very intelligent and cultured detective who loves classical music, opera and literature. All actions of the series take place in the city of Oxford.

Morse is known for his sharp mind, attention to detail and somewhat enigmatic personality. His loyal and hard-working colleague, Detective Sergeant Lewis, has been his partner for most of the series.

Their investigated cases are quite complex, confusing and relate to Oxford’s academic and social elite. The episodes show not only detective nuances but also personal and professional relationships of the policemen. Morse’s love of classical music and his respect for literature often play an important role in solving crimes.

Thaw became famous for his naturalistic and authentic acting style. His performances were sincere and exciting, allowing the audience to plunge headlong into the atmosphere of the series and the story. Thaw gave his character a unique emotional depth. He conveyed a range of emotions incredibly skilfully and convincingly. Those abilities added multifacetedness to the series, making it more fascinating. As a result, Thaw became known as an actor far beyond Manchester.

However, Thaw’s career didn’t end there. He actively continued to participate in the filming of various projects, TV shows, movies and series until his death.

LAST YEARS OF ACTIVITY AND DEATH

As you know, Thaw had a very difficult childhood. At an early age, he and his younger brother were abandoned by their mother and their father often disappeared at work to provide for the family. Without parental control, Thaw became a heavy smoker at the age of 12 and didn’t give up this habit as an adult. Obviously, it affected his health at a more mature age.

In addition to being a heavy smoker, Thaw was also a heavy drinker, but he managed to get rid of it in 1995. In 2001, he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Thaw underwent chemotherapy and hoped that it would help him to continue his acting career. At first, it seemed that chemotherapy was coping with the disease very well. However, in the same 2001, doctors informed the actor that the cancer was spreading throughout the body and that he was doomed.

Famous Manchester actor John Thaw died in 2002. Interestingly, the day before his death, he signed his last contract with ITV.

One of his last projects was the TV series Monsignor Renard. It was shown in 2000 and the actor had the role of Monsignor Augustine Renard. In 2001, John Thaw starred in the TV series The Glass in the role of Jim Proctor. The role of Harry in the TV film Hidden Treasure, which was released in 2001, became the last one for Thaw.
