YOUNG ROURKE
The famous rock musician was born in Manchester in 1964. He started playing music at a fairly early age. It all started when seven-year-old Andy got an acoustic guitar from his parents as a present. The boy was incredibly pleased and inspired by such a gift, so he began to practise almost every day. At the age of 11, Rourke met John Maher, aka Johnny Marr. Both of them attended the local St Augustine’s Grammar School. The boys played guitars together on breaks. A little later, Rourke and Marr formed their first musical group. At that time, Rourke became interested in playing the bass guitar. He was fascinated and continued to develop his musical career playing it. He didn’t let go of the bass guitar until the end of his life.
At the age of 15, it seemed that the boy’s life got out of control. He was obsessed with the dream of becoming a famous musician. Thus, to fully devote himself to creativity, Rourke left school. He wrote drafts and tried to play in various rock and funk bands. Soon, he started using heroin. His abuse worsened as he began to earn more money.
CREATION OF THE SMITHS ROCK GROUP
In the 1980s, Rourke, Morrissey, Marr and Joyce formed The Smiths. The band quickly gained attention with their distinctive melodies and highly poetic lyrics.
It should be noted that Rourke’s playing on the bass guitar was a key element of The Smiths sound. Rourke brought something special to the band’s performances. His melodic and rhythmic bass lines complemented Marr’s ringing guitar playing.
Within The Smiths, Rourke participated in the recording of four studio albums, namely
- The Smiths in 1984
- Meat Is Murder in 1985
- The Queen Is Dead in 1986
- Strangeways, Here We Come in 1987.
They also released a number of hit singles, such as This Charming Man, How Soon Is Now?, There Is a Light That Never Goes Out and Bigmouth Strikes Again. Each of these songs featured Rourke’s distinctive bass playing.
From the moment of their foundation, The Smiths had a colossal commercial success. Their work was praised by critics and adored by the public. However, the tension within the group grew with every year. The boys couldn’t get along. Most often, conflicts arose between Morrissey and Marr, which led to the complete breakup of the group in 1987.
ROURKE’S FURTHER LIFE AND CAREER
After The Smiths breakup, Rourke continued his career as a bass guitarist. He began to collaborate with other artists and implemented various musical projects. Rourke was part of other groups such as The Pretenders and also played with Sinéad O’Connor. The 1990s were very productive in his career.
Rourke continued to develop his career as a musician in the early 2000s. In particular, he formed the Freebass group. After the death of one of the band members, Rourke created a new one, Blitz Vega. He was also the founder of the D.A.R.K. group.
In addition to musical activities, the charity occupied a special place in Rourke’s life. In particular, Rourke and his associates repeatedly organised a series of concerts for the benefit of cancer research, known as Manchester v Cancer. The first such concert took place in 2006. Moreover, The Smiths made their reunion there. Since then, this charity concert has become an annual event for the city.
The topic of fighting cancer touched Rourke personally. His life wasn’t easy. At an early age, he started using drugs, which undoubtedly affected his health at a more mature age. In particular, Rourke fought pancreatic cancer for a long time. He underwent treatment, but the heart of the talented musician and bassist from Manchester stopped at the age of 59 in 2023. He died at the hospital at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Rourke was certainly a talented musician who left behind a great legacy and influence. His music is a timeless masterpiece. The last track Rourke recorded before his death was the 2022 song Strong Vampire.
Throughout his life, Rourke worked on solo projects and collaborated with other artists. He performed live from time to time and remained active until the end of his days. Although his involvement with The Smiths was relatively short-lived, his contribution to the band’s music had an indelible impact on the entire indie rock genre of the 1980s.
Interestingly, the musician used only a few bass guitars throughout his career, namely a Fender Precision Bass, Fender Jazz Bass and Yamaha BB3000 bass.
