Manchester, known for its rich industrial and cultural history, boasted numerous theatres, each bustling with performances and audiences. One of the city’s most iconic venues of the 20th century was the Hippodrome Theatre, opened in 1904. Located on Oxford Street, its lavish design and prime location quickly made it a favourite among locals and visitors. From vaudeville to grand theatrical productions, the Hippodrome was a thriving centre of Manchester’s performing arts scene. Built in 1904, the venue was designed by celebrated theatre architect Frank Matcham as a variety theatre and circus. The theatre’s first managing director was Oswald Stoll.

Before its grand opening in December 1904, the Hippodrome hosted a private performance for the press. Local newspapers raved about the venue’s stunning design, luxurious setting, and unique location. Many remarked that it rivalled the finest theatres in the country.

The official opening took place on 26 December 1904, featuring a variety show and spectacular aquatic performances from London’s “Tally Ho!” theatre.

The early years of the Hippodrome were marked by breathtaking performances. This period was a golden age for Manchester theatre, and the Hippodrome led the charge. Its productions offered an escape from the mundane, immersing audiences in a world of drama, comedy, and music.

The Hippodrome also became a launchpad for many budding Manchester stars of stage and screen. It played a crucial role in nurturing talent that later gained fame far beyond the industrial city of Manchester.

The Golden Era of the Hippodrome

The Hippodrome’s repertoire included a host of iconic performances and appearances by some of the most celebrated names of the era. Locals often reminisced for years about the shows they saw at the theatre, which stood as a testament to the professionalism of its management and performers.

The main genre showcased at the Hippodrome was variety theatre, also known as music hall.

The Hippodrome was also renowned for its pioneering stage technology. The venue featured a mechanical stage and arena as early as the 1900s. The arena, with a diameter of 42 feet, housed 70,000 gallons of water beneath its floor. The floor could be raised and lowered using a hydraulic ram, and the depth of the water was adjustable. The water could even be heated to 70°F, while special equipment created fountain effects for aquatic displays.

Another technological marvel was the mechanically operated mat, weighing over four tons, which was raised using electric machinery rather than manual labour—an innovation at a time when similar tasks in other theatres required more than 30 workers.

The stage’s unique architectural and technical features, coupled with its opulent interiors, left a lasting impression on visitors and theatre enthusiasts. The Hippodrome’s ability to combine innovative design with groundbreaking stagecraft made it one of a kind in the UK.

Farewell to the Hippodrome

Unfortunately, the history of the Hippodrome was short-lived. After just 30 years of continuous operation, the theatre’s curtains closed for the final time in 1934.

One of the last variety shows performed at the Hippodrome featured the celebrated comedians Max Wall and Frank Randle, alongside performers like Maisie Weldon and Helen Binney.

After its closure, the building was demolished to make way for the Gaumont Cinema, which had a seating capacity of 2,300.

The theatre’s closure was a significant loss for Manchester’s cultural life. The Hippodrome was not just a venue; it was a unique cultural landmark, known for its mesmerising productions and groundbreaking stage technology. The demolition of the theatre marked the end of an era, a time when live theatre was the beating heart of Manchester’s cultural identity.

In the early 20th century, theatres were the beating heart of cultural life in British cities.
