Founded in 1893 by Sir Charles Hallé, a renowned conductor and pianist, the college was established with the mission of providing world-class music education to students regardless of their financial status or background. It was envisioned as a conservatory to rival any in Europe. Charles Hallé, the founder of the music college, laid the groundwork for what would later become one of the leading institutions for music education in the country. Sir Charles Hallé, a talented German pianist and conductor, spearheaded its establishment. Hallé had moved to Manchester in the mid-19th century after being invited to lead Manchester’s Gentleman’s Concerts. In 1857, he worked on forming an orchestra for the Art Treasures of Great Britain exhibition, an event attended by Prince Albert and a vast audience. The exhibition became the largest ever held in the UK, and Hallé was so impressed by its success that he decided to remain in Manchester. He continued developing the choir that eventually became known as the Hallé Orchestra.

Over time, Hallé’s career flourished, establishing him as one of Manchester’s most prominent musicians. He tirelessly advocated for the city to have a conservatory offering high-quality music education. His vision materialised in 1893 when he founded RMCM, serving as its first principal and the head professor of piano.

Throughout the 20th century, the college expanded its reputation, becoming renowned not only for its innovative academic programmes but also for its emphasis on performances. Students were encouraged to participate in regular public concerts, which were considered integral to their education. This approach fostered a vibrant musical community both within the college and in Manchester.

Development of the Manchester Music College

RMCM officially opened its doors to students in 1893. The college was housed in a refurbished building that once served as a local club, located at the junction of Ducie Grove and Ducie Street, near Oxford Road.

The old club building was adapted to include a concert hall with 400 seats, walnut panelling, classrooms, a library, and administrative offices. Instead of a formal opening ceremony, the college held a conversazione, or public gathering. The first cohort of students was admitted in October 1893.

Another notable faculty member was German violinist Willy Hess, who joined the college as the head professor of violin from its inception.

The college thrived until the mid-20th century, when discussions began about merging RMCM with the Northern School of Music. This merger occurred in 1972, forming the new institution known as the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).

The consolidation combined the strengths of both institutions, creating a larger and more diverse conservatory offering a wider range of programmes and opportunities for students.

The Music College in the 21st Century

As part of the reorganisation, the college was relocated to a modern facility at the corner of Oxford Road and Booth Street West.

In the 21st century, RNCM is recognised as one of the world’s leading music colleges.
